Question of the Day
What exactly are your preferred and least favorite uses of the title in popular culture? Books, films, tv shows, tunes, comics, anything…My title is not really used enough to possess a lot of a solution for that one. Most likely probably the most well-known popular culture reference using i'm the Allman Brothers' "Melissa," which is not even really in regards to a girl named Melissa around it's about a rambling dude who fancies a woman named Melissa. Wev. I love Erykah Badu's version, though.Porno Graffiti in addition have a song known as [CN: strobe effect at link] "Melissa," which someone placed on a combination Compact disc for me personally once. I love the song, despite the fact that I've no clue how it is about since i have don't speak/read Japanese.Apart from that, it's pretty slim pickings. Melanie Mayron's character in Thirtysomething was named Melissa, the only recurring television character I'm able to recall, and that i can't think about a significant movie character named Melissa whatsoever. (Actually, the only person I'm able to think about is Jami Gertz's character in Twister, that is pretty pathetic, lol.)And So I don't genuinely have a popular. I will tell you my least favorite utilization of my title ever continues to be because the title of the trojan that made national head lines. Which was an enjoyable couple of days. Meh.

Quote of the Day
[Content Note: Guns violence misogyny.]"I'm feeling that there's more anger toward mom than there's toward the boy."—Lisa Sheridan, a resident of Newtown, cited within an article concerning the town's feelings toward Nancy Lanza, mother and first victim of mass killer Adam Lanza. It's obvious to question why Nancy Lanza possessed weapons, or even the particular weapons she did, or how secure she stored them, although it isn't particularly fair to neglect to think about the possibility she'd these to safeguard herself from her boy, considering that he was, unquestionably, some risk to her. It's obvious to question why she required him towards the gun range together with her, although it isn't particularly fair to neglect to grant her the great belief assumption it wasn't because she meant to train him to murder children. It's obvious to question several things, because we all know precious little about Nancy Lanza, with the exception that she apparently threw in the towel her career to remain home together with her troubled boy. Which her existence ended at his hands. It's bullshit to carry her more accountable than her adult boy.[H/T to Erica.]

This is so the worst thing you're going to read all day.
[Content Note: Gun violence misogyny gender essentialism.]Yesterday's Worst Factor would be a heaping pile of contemptible garbage by noted conservative thinker [sic] Charlotte now Allen.Present day Worst Factor is Charlotte now Allen's reprehensible defense of this heaping pile of contemptible garbage. As always, it's difficult to choose a popular passage, but I am gonna opt for:I'm also reacting to David Weigel, who explained I become my details wrong: that you will find really two males, a custodian along with a 4th-grade teacher, on Sandy Hook's 52-person staff. He's right, and that i stand remedied. This may help prove my point, though: just two adult males inside a building that contains 500 people — and it is not obvious that each of them were at the office on that day. Indeed, a trip to Sandy Hook's staff website is really a depressing experience, the ocean of women's names. Why aren't there more males? I truly pity a lady so filled with self-loathing that viewing "a ocean of women's names" from anywhere of non-exploitative employment is really a depressing experience. Exactly what a terrible approach to take through existence.[H/T to Shaker dani_alexis, in comments.]

[Content Note: The recording below includes footage of Dudley making growly sounds and both Dudley and Zelly getting upset and gnawing one another. They are just playing, but they're play-fighting, therefore if dog aggression is triggering or else problematic for you personally, you need to skip this video.]I've attempted to show our dogs into ball-enthusiasts (place all of the jokes here), but they're getting none from it. They've fully declined fetch, and they're totally indifferent for their Jolly Ball. All they would like to do is have fun with one another, chase me round the yard, and snuggle.Video Description: I roll a large blue ball toward Zelly, who's standing over the yard from me. She dodges it and runs happily toward me. Dudley saunters through the ball, completely disregarding it, and breaks to sniff the floor before walking toward me. [edit] The dogs tear round the garden together, significantly play-bowing at one another, getting upset and gnawing at one another, and chasing after one another around. They leap and tumble, Zelly dodging Dudley with fast spins and gymnastic barrel comes. "Young puppies!" I only say, plus they stop and check out me. "Hey, who's the great young puppies?" They shake themselves and appear around. [edit] I kick the large blue ball toward Dudley, who jumps from its way like it's radioactive. Zelly herds him from it, then goes and nudges the ball and runs back toward me. Dudley yawns. [edit] I walk toward Dudley, who snorts just like a equine. I laugh and scratch his mind, saying, "Hey, snorts." He walks to Zelly, who constitutes a playful move then goes out. Dudley looks around. I pan around to show Zelda standing directly behind Dudley. "Zelly!" I laugh. "What're you doing?" I scratch her mind. "Exactly what a good girl," I let her know. Then to Dudz: "Exactly what a good boy."Besties.

Ladies! Here Is Some Important Career Advice!
CNN asks: "Women: How can you intend to succeed at the office in 2013?"[R]esearch in the American Association of College Women implies that full-time working women continue to be generating 23% under males, and Catalyst 2012 Census of Fortune 500 informs us that ladies held only 16.6% of board seats this year, the seventh consecutive year of no growth. So, just how can women change this?Is the fact that a trick question? That seems like a trick question! Or whether it's a riddle: How can women, with substantially less wealth and extremely less energy inside a system that oppresses them, change that system on their own? Will the answer involve miracle unicorns?! That might be exciting!Career advisors tell women to become more forward in requesting promotions, pay increases and additional responsibility to locate a mentor to become listed on a networking group and also to accept praise more readily.Oh ' ' sure. Obviously. Clearly it's that ladies have to do more since it is our very own failures holding us back.I question what career advisors tell males about how they may change inequality within the place of work? Nothing, I wager! Will these steps help overhaul your job in 2013? Or have you got a different method of achieving your purpose?I've got a different method of achieving my goals, CNN!

Feminism 101: Helpful Hints for Dudes, Part 7
Following is really a primer for males who're truly wondering concerning how to be considered a more feminist-friendly dude. The majority of the information within this piece is, of course, generally relevant when it comes to being decent to folks surrounding you, however this continues to be written to become most available for males consistent with the goal of the series, that is reacting to generally e-mailed questions from fortunate males (here, generally meaning straight cis males) seeking advice regarding how to communicate with the ladies within their lives.[Content Note: Violence harassment.]Lately, another feminist blogger e-mailed me concerning the bullshit that's males entering conversations with feminists by saying such things as:InchI am getting clobbered for saying this, but..."or"I am just likely to say this after which try to escape....Inch—and then declaring these are reasonable items to say, since it is SO Frightening to interact with feminist women. Here's the one thing: If you wish to participate in good belief with feminist women, don't begin with a situation of implying that we're hostile (and strongly so, at this). That's not saying you don't possess a to feel intimidated. Feeling afraid of engaging with someone to that you have relative privilege and/or multiple rights, particularly when you are first analyzing that privilege, is natural—and a great sign you've showed up in a place in which you take into account that person a specialist on hir own encounters. It is also not saying that indicating violence is definitely a dreadful factor. But when you need to express violence, the easiest method to do that's, "Personally i think intimidated at this time consequently of my very own insufficient expertise," to not imply the issue lies using the expert. That reflexive assumption, delicately and continuously expressed, that feminists are hostile (and strongly so!) is among the reasons I placed the "no damaging belief" clause into Shakesville's leaving comments policy. If a person can't approach me, or any other contributor, or perhaps a fellow commenter, with no implication that feminists are violent tyrants who react vengefully to the expression of disagreement, that's not engaging with higher belief. To place it nicely.Just like any blanket generalization a good entire group, it's dehumanizing and gross, there is however an additional layer of fuckery in eliding that feminist ladies have faced actual, real-existence, significant effects for transgressive feminist thought before feminism even were built with a title.Feminist/womanist/progressive ladies have sometimes faced punishment by means of violence, including rape and murder sometimes by means of jail time sometimes by means of ostracization from family and/or community sometimes by means of insufficient professional possibilities sometimes by means of harassment at or termination from work sometimes in combinations thereof, which is almost not a comprehensive list. This is not a Factor of history. This is not a Factor That Occurs in Individuals Nations. This can be a factor that occurs even going to probably the most fortunate feminist women, who identify as feminist and lead public lives as feminists, whether or not they are covering reproductive privileges, game titles, race, literature, cooking, war, knitting, rape culture, or everything among. There's a danger and there's an expense.Even going to a feminist lady who would go to her RPG group and asks these to stop using "rape" to mean not a sexual assault, there's a danger and there's an expense. Even just in the very best-situation scenario, where everybody immediately states, "Oh gee, we are so sorry, Friend, and appreciate pointing that out!" with no one ever ever never keeps at the back of their brains that Friend is oversensitive and polices language and she or he is really a drag and political correctness blah blah, there's the emotional price of needing to request to begin with, and also the wondering, always wondering, if she has been forever called The Hysteric.A guy getting into a feminist blog thread to depart a comment isn't equivalent. Especially if he's departing a contrary comment, since many comments preceded by "I am most likely getting hammered with this, but..." are, the whole relaxation from the culture has his back. It is primarily the insufficient perspective, this pretense that it's feminists who're so strongly intolerant of dissension that they're vulnerable to interact with actual violence to anti-feminist ideas, while anti-feminists would be the tormented minority constantly at risk of undeserved retribution, which makes such salvos truly abhorrent. The worry to be punished to have an idea is actually projection—a deliberate misrepresentation in precise complete opposite of what males and lady face, which effectively masks the reality in our world. If you wish to engage feminist women in good belief, you have to begin by improving the facts of the lives. And you must realise that approaching a feminist using the implication she'll physically harm you doesn't invite a sort response. So expect if you can't acquire one.[Related Reading through: Teaspoon versus. Dumptruck.]

Reproductive Rights Updates: Oklahoma, Michigan, Maryland, National
It is a mixed bag of news round the country--but a minimum of there's what's promising. In Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Top Court has struck lower draconian and useless anti-choice legislation:OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma laws and regulations needing women seeking abortions with an ultrasound image placed before them when they hear an account from the fetus which prohibit off-label utilization of certain abortion-inducing medicine is unconstitutional, the condition Top Court ruled Tuesday. The state's greatest court determined that lower court idol judges were to halt the laws and regulations. In separate choices, the Oklahoma Top Court stated the laws and regulations, which received wide bipartisan support within the Legislature, violated a 1992 U.S. Top Court situation.[...]Tony Lauinger, chairman from the anti-abortion group Oklahomans for Existence, stated he thinks the condition Top Court has misunderstood the 1992 U.S. Top Court decision. He stated the Oklahoma ultrasound measure provides an amount of informed consent for ladies seeking abortions, something he stated the government decision permits.Yes, please continue Mr. Lauinger about how exactly a near unanimous (one judge needed to recuse herself) decision out of your condition top court justices is they have no idea what they are doing interpretation law. Oklahoma already has legislation that's essentially that needs someone to receive condition-mandated "counseling" generally made to discourage abortion (after which possess a round-the-clock waiting period). Clearly that isn't enough "informed consent" for the kind of Mr. Lauinger. It is also insufficient for Condition Attorney General Scott Pruitt who's thinking about attractive to the Top Court (of america).---In Michigan, legislators are utilizing their finish-of-session time to contend with the kind of Kansas and South Dakota in becoming hostile to autonomy: The condition Senate passed three bills on Thursday that will prohibit abortion coverage in condition-based medical health insurance trades and all sorts of private insurance coverage, and the other bill that will allow companies and doctors to won't cover or provide health treatment that they morally object. Condition congress will also be likely to pass a so-known as omnibus bill on Thursday that will impose prohibitive building rules on abortion treatment centers and prohibit using telemedicine to prescribe abortion medication. That last little bit of legislation, 5711, the main one concerning the TRAP laws and regulations--I authored about this in This summer. The balance was rushed although the senate committee with little public notice. It is not just controlling space on the floor or supply closet size, it dictates:Sec. 2836. (1) ALL fetal remains caused by abortions will be discarded by means authorized for other dead physiques, including funeral, cremation, or interment. Unless of course mom provides written consent for research around the fetal remains under section 2688, a health care provider who works an abortion shall request the ultimate disposition from the fetal remains caused by the abortion. When the fetal remains caused by an abortion are discarded by cremation, the fetal remains will be incinerated individually from the other medical waste. However, this subsection doesn't stop the synchronised cremation of fetal remains with items of conception or any other fetal remains caused by abortions.(2) This doesn't need a health care provider to go over the ultimate disposition from the fetal remains using the mother before carrying out the abortion, nor will it need a physician to acquire authorization in the mother for that final disposition from the fetal remains upon completing the abortion. This is applicable for under 20 days pregnancy. It doesn't apply if your miscarriage happens in your own home. When I stated in This summer: All "fetal remains" are equal however, many tend to be more equal than the others. ---In Maryland, particularly Montgomery County, local leaders are fighting in the court regarding consumer protection legislation fond of "crisis pregnancy centers" passed this year. The legislation states that CPCs must publish signs within the waiting room/reception desk that say they don't employ doctors and also the signs suggest people should visit a real healthcare professional for medical needs/questions. CPCs are, predictably, annoyed with this "breach of [their] freedom of expressionInch--thus a legal court fight. [The county's] arguments, made during the period of an hour or so . 5 before twelve idol judges within the U.S. Court of Appeals for that fourth Circuit in Richmond, were disputed through the centers, whose lawyers contended the signs violated their to freedom of expression.[...]Mariana Vera, the manager director of Centro Tepeyac, stated the center has well-trained volunteers and aims to help keep its participants safe and healthy.“They’re really worried about controlling us,” she stated of council people. “But they're wrong.”Centro Tepeyac, a Christian organization which has offered the Silver Spring neighborhood in excess of 2 decades, is situated in 2 townhomes behind the county district court in Silver Spring. Vera stated that staff people do encourage clients to obtain treatment but they give a valuable service too.Among the center’s fliers in The spanish language, entitled “Raquel’s Winery: Healing the discomfort of abortion, weekend after weekend,” lists what it really states are possible aftereffects of abortion: suicidal ideas, substance abuse, “the anxiety about God’s punishment.”(Pause re-read) Why, yes, that individual did just say clients meet to help keep people "safe and healthyInch while its centers also provide outright is based on the guise of guilt, fear and shame within the literature they stock. Suppose. In the hearing, the idol judges grappled with if the law was an overreach of energy. Among the idol judges, Dennis Shedd, recommended when what the law states is upheld, legislatures may also require abortion treatment centers to publish signs saying, “Abortion may cause you trouble for the relaxation of the existence.”Well, Judge Shedd, that might be let us refer to it as problematic because that hypothetical sign isn't true as the signs the county requires are, actually, true. The twelve signs the county states should be published are factual and never duplicitous simplification according to bullshit. The town of Baltimore had their consumer protection legislation struck lower as well as had their appeal heard Thursday.---The 2009 week the united states Senate all approved the nation's Defense Authorization Act which consists of a provision championed and written by Senator Jeanne Shaheen which requires insurance policy for abortion for military personnel who're sufferers of rape or incest. Presently military personnel have only coverage for abortion in situations in which the service member would certainly die with no abortion. The legislation now would go to the home, whose form of the NDAA doesn't include Sen. Shaheen's provision.Shaheen stated the final time the rape and incest provision managed to get this far within the legislative process was 2005, if this passed the Senate but was removed in the ensuing conference committee. This time around around, she noted that three from the four committee leaders offer the provision, including Senate Military Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Military Committee ranking member John McCain, R-Ariz., who chosen in support of the amendment in committee. In the home, Military Committee ranking member Adam Cruz, D-Clean., has backed legislation dealing with similar problem.Shaheen stated she hopes House Military Committee Chairman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Calif., is going to be prepared to leave the supply within the bill.Levin stated after passage from the Senate bill that he's “very optimistic” your final bill would leave House-Senate conference, while acknowledging the major challenge 's time – using the current session of Congress because of finish in under per month.[...]“This isn’t about politics or ideology sturdy fundamental justness and equity,” stated upon the market Maj. Gen. Gale Pollock, who had been acting surgeon general from the Military in 2007, throughout a look and feel at Shaheen’s press conference. “Women who serve our nation shouldn't be treated as political pawns.”You are correct! Let me expand on that thought though: nobody ought to be treated as political pawns, serving within the military or otherwise.

More Decency, Please
[Content Note: Reproductive auditing.]So, next-gen conservative thinker [sic] Ross Douthat's latest column for that New You are able to Occasions, "More Babies, Please," is about the US' rapidly declining birthrate. And that he provides extensive great ideas about why that's so—"economic instability and lack of marriageable males," for instance—but my personal favorite theory is certainly that one:Beneath these policy debates, though, lie cultural forces that no legislator can definitely aspire to change. The retreat from child showing is, at some level, an indicator recently-modern exhaustion — a decadence that first came about in the western world however haunts wealthy communities around the world. It is a spirit that rights the current within the future, selects stagnation over innovation, favors what already is available over what may be. It holds the conveniences and pleasures of modernity, while shrugging from the fundamental sacrifices that built our civilization to begin with.Ah, our old friend "not getting children is selfish," but outfitted in the ugliest clothes imaginable. It requires a unique kind of asshole to accuse individuals who not have kids with "privileging the current within the future, selecting stagnation over innovation, choosing what already is available over what may beInch when so many people are selecting against childbearing due to a really uncertain future, economically and existentially, because of Douthat's cohorts within the corporate conservative trenches who've caused economic turmoil along with a global climate crisis in search of satiating a voracious avarice that may not often be more contemptuous of progress or even more disconcerned using the future. To say the decadent ones are individuals who opt from childbearing due to the fucked-up world produced through the optimism-hostile avarice-fiends to whom Douthat carries water isn't just a mendacious position to consider it is a profoundly indecent one.The majority of my buddies don't have children. Some don't have children simply because they can't—one couple due to fertility issues however the relaxation since they're same-sex couples in states that either will not allow them to adopt and/or will not allow them to have equal standing as a parent if perhaps the first is a bio parent. Decadence, states Ross Douthat. Some people don't have children because we can't manage to, because of our shitty economy and/or bleak job prospects and/or towering students financial loans and/or the possible lack of medical health insurance. Decadence, states Ross Douthat. Some people don't have children because we don't reside in a country that supports inside a significant way a ladies ability to possess a career and become a parent, and, when instructed to choose, we decide ourselves, because we all know we'd not make good moms to children we might resent. Decadence, states Ross Douthat. Some people don't have children because, despite Douthat's contention that "government's energy over fertility rates is restrictedInch with zero reference to its intervention in reproductive privileges, the GOP continues to be deteriorating use of reproductive health care in condition government authorities nationwide, and ladies who reside in states where they aren't guaranteed use of abortion even when our way of life hang within the balance, are reluctant to conceive whatsoever. Some in our midst might want children, but don't wish to risk our way of life to possess them. Decadence, states Ross Douthat. Some people don't have children because we be worried about creating dysfunctional and abusive family dynamics. Decadence, states Ross Douthat. Some people don't have children because we just do not want them. (With no you make a worse parent than somebody that does not wish to be one.) Decadence, states Ross Douthat. The majority of us don't have children for a mix of these reasons, a few of which be more effective referred to as "valid reactions to conservative policy" and/or "our very own fucking choices about our very own fucking lives that is none of the fucking business," instead of "decadence." If conservatives like Douthat want more USians to possess children, possibly they might go about making the united states the kind of country by which more and more people using the privilege of selecting not have children choose otherwise. Naturally, however, Douthat favors to accept usual conservative route of tasking people with fixing the systemic problems they produced:Such decadence do not need to be permanent, but neither will it be un-tied by political self-discipline alone. It may simply be corrected through the slow accumulation of person options, that is how all social and cultural recoveries are ultimately made.Just feed your babies bootstraps. Everything is going to be fine.

Good Morning! (Or Whatever.)
This is a nice article around three those who are fighting hunger in america. Things I like about these tales, aside from the truth that they can be beneficial and belief-restorative, would be that the people featured possess a deep respect for that agency and dignity of those they are helping.Among the best methods to empower people would be to empower them. That seems like probably the most apparent statement on the planet, but many of charitable organizations haven't in the past been particularly thinking about supplying decision-making possibilities to folks they are helping. There's been a great deal of trying to become a messiah instead of as being a partner, a great deal of behavior regulating instead of listening. That practice of many traditional non profit organizations, incidentally, is really a large a part of why conservatives assert that the robust social back-up will "entrench dependence," or some variation thereof—because that is what old-school moralizing non profit organizations do, once they neglect to empower individuals with choice. So when our condition welfare programs get cluttered with work needs and dictate how money could be spent, we obtain similar results. Many people, because of the chance to create choices on their own, will get the best choices on their own.

Makes Perfect Sense
So...the brand new film with Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren is all about how Alfred Hitchcock's wife Alma Reville, despite being his creative partner as well as an integral collaborator in the film-making process, was routinely and delicately disappeared behind him along with a towering narrative of person genius that yet remains even today, which film is known as Hitchcock? Okay then.
